While distracted driving has received a great deal of attention recently as a leading cause of car accidents, a new study indicates that it may be a small problem compared to something most drivers see every day: the failure to use turn signals.
According to a recent study by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), drivers either fail to use their turn signals or fail to turn them off 48 percent of the time when changing lanes. In addition, 25 percent of drivers fail to use their turn signals when making a turn.
The SAE estimates that the failure to properly use turn signals – whether when switching lanes or making a turn – causes approximately two million car accidents in the United States each year. By comparison, distracted driving causes roughly 950,000 car accidents each year.
The SAE study is the first of its kind and it is sure to lead to strategies to address this burgeoning problem.
